QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE
THE SUPREME EXPRESSION
OF THE TERROIR OF QUINTA DO NOVAL
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterised by its purity of fruit and a fine and delicate quality that is typical of the wines of the property in general but which finds its most remarkable and enduring expression in the Vintage Ports. Equilibrium, harmony, finesse and elegance characterise our great Vintage Ports, which are declared only in great years (3 or 4 years in a decade) and only when the wines come up to Noval’s exacting standards.
Even then, the wines selected for the Quinta do Noval Vintage Port blend represent only a small proportion of our total production.

QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE 2011
CHACTERISTICS OF THIS VINTAGE
Although there is no such thing as an easy year in the Douro Valley, 2011 was a particularly challenging year in the vineyard. After a wet winter the weather was highly erratic from spring to autumn, with several extreme heat waves. Rain towards the end of August having provided the necessary moisture for maturation to resume its course, Noval gambled on postponing the harvest for a week for the grapes to reap the full benefit of this unhoped for precipitation and reach full maturity.
With continued brilliant sunshine, this late harvest turned out to be an excellent decision. Once crushed in the lagares, the grapes revealed a wonderful deep colour, remarkable aromas and ideal sugar content and acidity: the sign of a year with immense potential.
“Very seductive. Lovely fresh floral notes on the nose, many delicate complex aromas. Violets. Wonderful purity and fresh precision of fruit. Intense concentration, but delicate at the same time. Fine long tannins.”
António Agrellos, Technical Director - May 2013
QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE 2008
CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS VINTAGE
Structure and potency
The weather was cool in 2008 and ultimately this explains the low yields. As a result, our Vintage lots turned out to be concentrated, structured and highly aromatic. We simply felt that this smaller quantity of wine was too irresistible and so decided to declare it as a Vintage.
«A deep, ink-like colour with an intense bouquet of wild flower and dark fruit. This Vintage port is rich and potent, elegant and suave with multiple layers of concentrated aromas of fruit, firm, succulent tannins and a very long finish.»
António Agrellos, Technical Director

QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE 2007
CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS VINTAGE
Elegance
The weather in 2007 was nicely balanced between rainfall in the spring and slightly cool summer nights. This gave our Vintage port an expression of very pure fruit and remarkable elegance, finesse and balance. The wine’s high level of acidity also points to its great ageing potential.
“Very fresh, intense delicate fruit, lovely balance, very long. Full in mouth but delicate at the same time. Good depth and volume.”
António Agrellos, Technical Director – May 2013

QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE 2004
CHACTERISTICS OF THIS VINTAGE
At Noval the bud burst occurred mid-March followed by a quick flowering in the end of May due to high temperatures and lack of precipitation. The beginning of maturation occurred early July, still without any precipitation and with high temperatures.
The maturation was marked by an initial of very hot and dry weather that preceded August 15th. It was then slowed by cooler temperatures and rain in the second half of August. After this period, with a very hot September and again with the help of two days of rain, maturation exploded in the second half of the month to reach very high degrees in sugar content well above 20º!
The harvest took place on September 20th until October 20th in glorious sun, with the exception of two days of rain towards the end. In general terms, the health conditions of the vintage were excellent which helped the essential sorting of the grapes.
“Powerful and still tannic. Eucalyptus and cedar on the nose, resinous, very attractive. Powerful but fresh en bouche, energetic. Spicy, black pepper and liquorice, violets. Great promise for the future.”

QUINTA DO NOVAL VINTAGE 2003
CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS VINTAGE
Structure and potency
The wettest winter followed by the hottest summer. This off-the-charts weather pattern resulted in high levels of sugar and acidity. In other words, the ideal combination for perfect balance. As a result, our Vintage stands out for its structure, deep colour and complexity of aromas.
“Monumental, voluptuous wine, with luscious fresh ripe black fruits. Beginning to show delicious open notes of evolution. Ethereal on nose, wonderful plenitude in the mouth, liquorice. Ripe complete and fine.”

DECLARATION
Quinta do Noval has always had a slightly eccentric approach to Vintage Declarations, and indeed the house to a great extent made its name with its declaration of the great 31 Vintage.
